Notes on... Smultronställe

In the week that saw a new speakeasy launched on Colmore Row (we've been sworn to secrecy, but you really don't need to be Miss Marple to work out the deets) we thought it worth reminding you about the originators of the underground Brum bar scene: Smultronställe.

An ever changing menu keeps things fresher than a fella from West Philadelphia (born and raised). Our latest visit was kicked off with G&T made with acorns, chestnuts, oak moss, a rotary evaporator and a specific type of bubble-free ice carved into a crystal clear block, right in front of you using a not-at-all terrifying saw.

Other highlights from their 'Market List' included a fruity spin on a soda stream, injected with fizz using nitrous oxide because the bubbles are significantly finer than your standard carbonated cocktail. There's also a black forest gateaux in liquid form, a Japanese Yuzu sip that made our tastebuds foxtrot, and a coffee and Branca Menta chocolates to finish — the likes of which you'll never have experienced.

If you want a casual catch up with your closest pals, maybe look elsewhere. If you're after an extraordinary cocktail journey, there's few better. Book.
