Luxe Camping, Lidl Budget

Being at one with room service is more our style than being at one with nature. But these rustic spots are light on roughing it and heavy on life-changing experiences and gosh-darned gorgeous vistas. The previously pricey Tuscany and south of France become more purse-friendly as soon as you’re under canvas, so leave the two-man tent at home. For your next temp home, think yurts, caves and gypsy caravans.

La Parenthèse, France

Friendly vibe, yes please. Countryside chicness, I’ll take some of that. Swimming pool and yoga classes? Tick and tick. La Parenthèse Les Ormesfeels intimate, despite having room for 100+ groups. All the Frenchy-France rustic touches you could ever want, there are pre-pitched tents, lodges and cabins for those that don’t want to do any of the hard work. That’s us then. Tent pitch from €18.

Il Baciarino, Italy

Not *technically* a camp site, Il Baciarino has all the back to nature touches to feel like you’re on an adventure – but the kind of adventure with bottles of wine on arrival and wood-fired whirlpools. The hotel is built into a hill near Vetulonia, and is a destination for cool kids from nearby-ish Florence. Décor is minimal in the rooms, but the views are oh so maximal. Double from £60 in low season.

Simuni, Croatia

It might not be the case in its cities, but rural parts of Croatia still offer insanely good value for money. It's probably a bit far to drive with all the necessary kit, so you're fully excused for living it up in one of Simuni's fully equipped cabins, under shady pines and oak trees, overlooking the Adriatic. There are six beaches to choose from, because five definitely wouldn't be enough. Pitches start at €8.50 per tent, bungalows from €72.

Cortijo Bablou, Spain

Andalusian charmer Cortijo Bablou is a farmhouse set on eight hectares of land and overlooks white-walled village Argos De La Frontera. Sure, there are rooms in the house, but we're seeking adventures here, people. Stay in one of the nomad tents or the gypsy caravan, before exploring Cadiz and Seville. Then take a dip in the pool or book a massage when all the adventuring gets too much. Tents start at €80.
